Your Game Plan for an Unforgettable Northern Michigan Weekend

There’s something about a Northern Michigan weekend that feels bigger than just two days β€” the air is fresher, the water bluer, and somehow time slows down (even when your schedule doesn’t).

Whether you’re here for the first time or coming back for your annual fix of lake views and local flavor, a little planning goes a long way. In this guide, we’re mapping out a thoughtfully curated weekend itinerary to help you make the absolute most of your time Up North.

The Village

Day 1: Downtown & The Village

Focus on the city center and its unique historical architecture.

Morning: Start with breakfast at Red Spire Brunch House in The Village at Grand Traverse Commons. Take a guided historic tour of the former asylum grounds before browsing the "Mercato" shops in the building's lower level.

Afternoon: Walk or bike the TART Trail around Boardman Lake. Stop at The Filling Station Microbrewery for flatbread pizzas and local craft beer right on the old railroad tracks.

Evening: Stroll along Front Street for shopping. For dinner, try The Little Fleet, an indoor/outdoor bar surrounded by local food trucks.

Cheers to sunset at Blush

Day 2: Old Mission Peninsula

This narrow strip of land is famous for high-end wineries and bay views.

Morning: Drive to the tip of the peninsula to visit Mission Point Lighthouse, located on the 45th parallel.

Afternoon: Spend the afternoon "winery hopping." Highly rated stops include Brys Estate (famous for their lavender garden and frosΓ©), Mari Vineyards (Italian-style wines), and Chateau Chantal (known for ice wine and 360-degree views).

Evening: Enjoy a fine dining experience at Trattoria Stella (reservations highly recommended) or a lakeside dinner at The Boathouse Restaurant. Finish the night with a sunset and drinks in Blush.

Day 3: Sleeping Bear Dunes & M-22

Head west for a 30–40-minute drive to the National Lakeshore

Morning: Hike the Empire Bluff Trail for a high-perch view of Lake Michigan that is relatively easy for most fitness levels.

Afternoon: Drive the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive ($25 park pass required), stopping at the famous #9 and #10 overlooks for 450-foot drops to the water.

Late Afternoon: Visit the historic village of Glen Haven or drive further north to Leland to see "Fishtown," a preserved commercial fishing village with tiny shanties turned into shops.

Final Stop: On your way back to town, grab a final scoop of ice cream at Moomers Homemade Ice Cream

A weekend in Northern Michigan may be short, but with the right plan, it can feel wonderfully full. From morning coffee by the water to sunset views and everything in between, it’s all about savoring the moments that make this place so special. When you’re ready to turn your two days Up North into something unforgettable, start by choosing the right place to stay. Book your weekend at the Alexandra Inn and let the lake be your backdrop for every perfectly planned moment.
